Santa Suit Sizing Guide: How to Get the Right Fit

The most common reason a Santa suit disappoints is not the fabric, it's the fit. Because costumes can only be returned unopened, getting the size right before you order is the whole game. This guide explains how our Santa suits are sized, how to measure yourself in a few minutes, and how to read the ranges on each product page. If you want the complete size-by-size chart, our companion post, the Santa suit sizing guide by jacket size, lists every range we carry. Prices below are current at time of writing.

Santa suits are sized by jacket number, not S/M/L

Nearly every adult Santa suit we sell lists a jacket size: the same chest-based number printed inside a men's sport coat. A "Large 42-48" coat is cut for a chest of 42 to 48 inches. The letters are only shorthand, and here is the catch: the same letter means different numbers on different suits. On our Fun World suits, "Adult Large" is size 40-48 (Rich Velour, Premium Plush, Economy) and "Adult XL" is 50-54 (Plus Size Premium Plush, Santa Suit Adult Men's). On our Halco suits, "Large" is 42-48 and "XL" is 50-56 (Rental Quality, Burgundy Velvet, Regal Red Velvet). Always read the number, never the letter.

How to measure yourself for a Santa suit

You need three numbers and a soft tape measure. Chest: wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest, under the arms, with the tape level and snug but not tight. That number is your jacket size; the tag in a suit jacket that fits you will confirm it. Waist: measure where you'll actually buckle the Santa belt. Very few Santa suit pages publish a waist figure (the Regency Plush Santa Suit, XL, lists "pants 40 inches at waist"), so treat the jacket range as the primary number. Inseam: crotch seam to the floor in the shoes you'll wear. Our Santa suit pages don't list inseams, and every set includes boot tops that cover the lower leg, so chest is the measurement that decides your size. If you plan to wear a belly pad, measure with it on.

Every size range we carry, by suit

One size, 40-48. The Men's Complete Velour Santa Suit ($48.99) is one size fits most, 40-48, with a pull-over jacket and back closure. The Adult Economy Santa Suit ($73.99) is "Adult Large, fits size 40-48," the Adult Plush Regal Santa Costume ($122.99) is one size 40-48, and the Rich Velour ($122.99) and Premium Plush ($203.99) suits are both Adult Large, 40-48. The Men's Santa Suit Super Deluxe ($667.99) is listed as "one size fits up to a size 44."

The in-between ranges. The Men's Santa Suit ($88.99) is adult size 46-50 with elastic-waist pants. The Santa Suit Adult Men's Costume ($85.99), Men's Plus Size Rich Velour ($167.99) and Men's Plus Size Premium Plush ($229.99) are all Adult XL, 50-54. The Regency Plush Santa Suit XL ($118.99) fits up to a 50-56 jacket. The Men's Victorian Santa Suit ($245.99) is one size fits most men 42-50.

Sized suits, one listing with a size picker. The Adults Plush Rental Quality Santa Suit comes in XL (jacket 50-56, $149.99), XXL (58-62, $172.99) and XXXL (64-70, $184.99). The Men's Burgundy Velvet Santa Suit runs Large (42-48, $355.99), XL (50-56, $379.99), XXL (58-62, $399.99) and XXXL (64-70, $429.99). The Regal Red Velvet suit is Large 42-48 or XL 50-56; the Velveteen Santa Suit is Large 42-48 or XXL 58-62; the Professional Santa Suit XXL fits jacket size 58-62; and the Plus Size Plush Crimson 2XL is listed as plus size 58-60.

The biggest sizes. The Adult Men's Majestic Santa Claus Suit is sold per size: Medium (up to 55 chest), Large (up to 66), XL (up to 69) and XXL (up to 76). At time of writing the XXL ($799.99) is the one in stock.

Mind the gaps between ranges

Look closely at the sized suits and you'll notice the ranges skip numbers: 48 to 50, and 56 to 58. If your chest measures 49 or 57, no listing names your number. The product pages don't tell us how each coat drapes, so we won't guess for you: contact us before ordering rather than after. The same goes for anyone between the one-size 40-48 suits and the 50-54 plus sizes.

The pieces that adjust, and the ones that don't

Coats come two ways: pull-over jackets with a back closure (Complete Velour, Economy, Santa Suit Adult Men's) and zipper-front coats (Rich Velour, Premium Plush, Rental Quality, Burgundy Velvet and every professional suit). Pants are listed with side pockets on most suits; the Men's Santa Suit and the Boy's Red Velvet suit specify elastic waists. Belts on the velvet suits (Burgundy Velvet, Regal Red Velvet, Professional) are Naugahyde with eyelets and a gilt buckle, so there is room to adjust; boot tops and gloves are one size on every set. Wigs and beards, included or bought from our Santa beards and wigs, are one size fits most.

Kids' and baby Santa suits are sized by age

The Kids Plush Santa Suit ($108.99) is sold as Medium (6-8), XL (10-12) and XXL (14-16). The Boy's Red Velvet Santa Suit is listed as Kids Medium ($83.99) and Extra Large ($105.99) without an age range, so pick by your child's usual size. The Baby Santa Suit Costume ($78.99) comes in 6-12 and 18-24 months, the Baby Santa Costume is sold in 6-12, 12-18 and 18-24 months, and the Toddler Santa Costume ($41.99) is Medium (18-24 months) or Large (2T-4T).

Why measuring first saves money

Under our refund policy, costumes are returnable only in unopened, unblemished original packaging, within 30 days of receipt, with prior authorization from customer service, and refunds exclude return shipping and a 15% restocking fee. Wigs, beards and facial hair are not returnable at all. Three minutes with a tape measure beats all of that.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size Santa suit do I need?

Measure your chest at the fullest point, under the arms, and match that number to the jacket range on the product page. Most of our one-size suits are listed as 40-48; sized suits run Large 42-48, XL 50-56, XXL 58-62 and XXXL 64-70, and the Majestic suit goes up to a 76 chest.

What does "jacket size 50-56" mean on a Santa suit?

It is a chest measurement in inches, the same number used on men's suit jackets. A 50-56 coat is cut for a chest between 50 and 56 inches. Read the numbers, not the letter, because Large and XL cover different ranges on different suits.

What if I'm between sizes, like a 49 or a 57 chest?

The sized suits skip from 48 to 50 and from 56 to 58, and our product pages do not publish how each coat drapes. Contact customer service before you order so we can help you choose; costumes can only be returned unopened.

Do Santa suits come in kids' and baby sizes?

Yes. The Kids Plush Santa Suit comes in Medium (6-8), XL (10-12) and XXL (14-16); the Baby Santa Suit Costume in 6-12 and 18-24 months; and the Toddler Santa Costume in Medium (18-24 months) and Large (2T-4T).
