The Best Halloween Costume Ideas for Families

The best family Halloween costume is the one everybody agrees to wear past the driveway. That sounds like a low bar, but anyone who has tried to keep a headpiece on a three-year-old knows it is not. After years of outfitting families (including our own), we have landed on a short list of themes that have real costumes for every age, hold up to trick-or-treating, and still look great in the photo.

Star Wars: the theme with the most sizes

If you want one theme that truly goes from baby to grown-up to dog, this is it. We stock Grogu for babies and toddlers, the Mandalorian for kids in value and deluxe versions, Boba Fett and Darth Vader for kids and adults, Princess Leia and Ahsoka for women, and a Grogu dog costume. The Toddler Grogu costume (robe plus soft fabric headpiece, 3T-4T) is our single most popular family piece. Start with the Star Wars collection.

Super Mario Bros.: built for siblings

Mario and Luigi were made for two kids who need to be different but matching. The Boy's Mario costume includes the jumpsuit, red hat, and a self-adhesive mustache, and the Toddler Luigi has a jumpsuit, detachable belly, green hat, and white gloves (mustache not included on that one, so pack an eyeliner pencil). Add a Princess Peach dress for a parent or older sister, and we carry Yoshi for toddlers too.

Superhero squad

Marvel is the other theme that spans ages well. Toddler Spider-Man and Captain America, kids' Spider-Man, Black Panther, and Iron Man, adult Spider-Man and Deadpool, plus a Captain America dog costume. For younger kids, the value costumes are hand wash cold and around $30 at time of writing, and half masks under $12 let a reluctant sibling join without a full suit. Browse Superhero Costumes for the whole roster.

The walking food truck

Our funniest family theme, and the one that gets the most laughs on the sidewalk. A toddler hot dog (lightweight over-the-head tunic, 3T-4T), a big kid in a deluxe banana (laminated poly-foam tunic, sizes 7-10), parents in the hot dog and bun couples costume or a taco and lime set, and the dog in a hot dog costume. Tunics go over regular clothes, so kids stay warm and can still run. See all of it in Food and Beverage costumes.

Bluey for families with little ones

If your household runs on Bluey episodes, this is the easy win. The Toddler Classic Bluey is a 100% polyester jumpsuit with a large open-face dog headpiece, Bingo comes as a puffy-sleeved dress for toddlers, and there are baby sizes and an adaptive Bluey costume for kids who need easier dressing. Parents can be Bandit and Chilli with a blue or orange outfit and a pair of ears, which is exactly the level of effort most parents want.

Classic mix and match

Not every family needs a franchise. A "zoo" theme (kids' shark, toddler cow, adult unicorn), an "under the sea" theme built around our shark costumes, or a "breakfast table" theme from the food collection all work with whatever each person likes best. The rule is one connecting idea, not identical outfits.

Picking the theme without a meltdown

  • Let the youngest pick first. A toddler will not compromise. Everyone else can.
  • Check sizes for everyone before committing. Our collections filter by age group, so you can confirm a theme covers the whole family in one visit.
  • Buy tunics for kids who hate "stuff on their head." Banana, hot dog, and shark tunics have face openings and nothing else.
  • Layer for weather. Most jumpsuits and tunics fit over a long-sleeve shirt and leggings.

Comfort and safety on the night

Keep hems above the ankle for anyone under ten, make sure masks have clear eye openings (or swap for a headpiece), and add a glow stick or small flashlight to each trick-or-treat bag. Do a full try-on a few days before so you can trade sizes if needed; our refund policy covers unopened costumes returned within 30 days with prior authorization. Ready to start? Everything above lives in our Kids Costumes and Adult Costumes collections. Prices are accurate at time of writing.
