After packing boxes for mall Santas, church pageants, office parties and grandpas surprising the kids on Christmas Eve, we know the questions people actually ask: What's in the box? What size am I? Is the beard included? Will it get here in time? This guide answers all four, using details straight from our product pages.

Start with the job, not the suit

The right Santa suit depends on how often you'll wear it and how close people will get. Before you browse the Santa Suits collection, ask yourself three things:

• How many appearances? One party a year is fine in velour. Twenty a season calls for lined plush.
• How close is the crowd? Kids on your lap will tug the beard and inspect the trim.
• Indoors or out? Heavy plush is wonderful for a parade and less wonderful in a crowded gym.

Tier one: classic suits under $125

This is where most first-time Santas start, and honestly, where a lot of families stay. The Men's Complete Velour Santa Suit ($48.99 at time of writing) is our best seller for a reason: pull-over jacket with belt loops, pants with side pockets, white fur trim, black belt and boot tops, white gloves, a beard, and a hat with attached hair, all in one bag. It fits most adults, jacket size 40 to 48.

The Adult Economy Santa Suit ($73.99) keeps the same complete kit, beard included, in Adult Large (40 to 48). The Men's Rich Velour Santa Suit ($122.99) upgrades to a zipper-front jacket with fur-trimmed pants, hat, belt, boot tops and gloves, but no beard, so plan on adding one.

Our pick in this tier is the Adult Plush Regal Santa Costume ($122.99). It's a deluxe plush suit with faux fur trim, front-zip jacket, pants, belt, boot tops and hat, and it includes the beard, the wig and a reusable zippered storage bag. For a suit you'll pull out every Christmas morning, that bag matters more than you'd think.

Tier two: plush and rental-quality suits, $150 to $250

If you'll be Santa several times a season, this is the sweet spot. The Adults Plush Rental Quality Santa Suit ($172.99 in XXL) is built the way rental shops build them: zipper coat, pants with side pockets, a hat with a large pom-pom, a bound belt with gilt prong buckle, deluxe vinyl boot tops with white pile plush cuffs, and white knit gloves. The Men's Premium Plush Santa Suit ($203.99) is trimmed in faux rabbit fur, Adult Large, size 40 to 48. For old-world charm, the Men's Victorian Santa Suit ($245.99) is a satin-lined hooded burgundy robe with a gold-trimmed capelet, emerald satin tunic and gold rope belt, sizes 42 to 50. Spot clean with a damp cloth and air dry; wig and beard not included.

Tier three: professional suits, $300 and up

Professional Santas and event companies buy here because these suits are lined, heavy and made to be photographed up close. The Men's Burgundy Velvet Santa Suit ($355.99 in Large) has a partially satin-lined zipper coat, white long-hair plush trim, and a Naugahyde belt and boot tops. The Professional Santa Suit ($368.99, fits jacket 58 to 62) is fully satin lined with an inside coat pocket, handy for a phone or a list of who's been nice.

At the top sits the Adult Men's Majestic Santa Claus Suit ($799.99 in XXL): thick burgundy pile plush, fully satin lined, with a decorative cast belt buckle. Wig and beard are sold separately, which is normal at this level since professionals have strong opinions about their beard.

Beards, boots and the finishing touches

If your suit doesn't include a beard, or you want a better one, browse Santa beards and wigs. The Regular Santa Wig and Beard ($62.99) has long wavy strands. The Professional Santa Wig and Beard Set ($80.99) is fully washable, which matters when kids will be handling it. For a full, curly storybook look, the Majestic Santa Wig and Beard with Wired Mustache ($109.99) is our favorite.

Not every Santa needs to be convincing, either: the Santa Hoopster ($54.99) and Carry Me Santa ($32.99) are the ones that get laughs at gift exchanges.

Sizing, shipping and returns in plain English

Our suits are sized by jacket size, so measure your chest and compare it to the size line on the product page rather than guessing from your shirt size. Between two sizes, most Santas prefer the roomier one, because padding and layers add up.

Standard shipping is free on orders over $99. From September through December, processing takes 24 to 72 hours, ground delivery arrives 3 to 5 business days after it ships, and 2-Day and Overnight options are offered at checkout. We ship only within the United States and cannot ship to PO boxes. A few suits, including the Rich Velour and Plush Regal, ship separately from the rest of your order.

Returns must be requested within 30 days of receipt and authorized first. Costumes are returnable only in unopened, unblemished original packaging, wigs and beards are not returnable at all, and refunds exclude return shipping and a 15% restocking fee. So try the suit on over clean clothes before you commit, and keep the packaging.

It depends on the tier. Our Velour and Economy suits include jacket, pants, hat, belt, boot tops, white gloves and a beard. The Rich Velour and Premium Plush include everything except the beard.
