Minecraft Costumes for Kids: Steve, Creeper, Enderman, and the Ender Dragon

If there is a kid between five and twelve in your house, you already know how this Halloween is going. Somebody wants to be Steve. Somebody else wants to be the thing that blows Steve up. We have a full Minecraft costume collection to make that happen, and because the sizes and styles are a little unusual (pop-outs, inflatables, block heads), here is the parent's version of what fits whom and what comes in each box.

Which character fits which kid

The Kids Classic Minecraft Steve Pop-Out Costume is the starting point, and it comes in three real sizes: Small 4-6, Medium 7-8, and Large 10-12, all $69.99 at time of writing. Sizes on these are by age range, not S/M/L clothing sizes, so pick the range your child is in and go up if they are tall for it.

The inflatables are one-size. The Boy's Inflatable Minecraft Enderman Costume ($95.99) and the Kids Minecraft Ender Dragon Inflatable Costume ($109.99) both say "one size fits most children." The Kids Inflatable Minecraft Llama Ride-On ($86.99) narrows it to "fits up to size 8," and the Kids Deluxe Inflatable Spider Jockey ($130.99) is sized Medium 7-8.

Pop-out vs inflatable: what's in each box

A pop-out costume gets its blocky shape from a frame, not from air. Every Steve size lists the same contents: "a lightweight wire frame, tunic, pants and headpiece," in polyester. Your kid steps into the pants, the tunic drops over the frame, the head goes on, and they are square. No batteries, no fan, no noise.

An inflatable gets its shape from a small battery fan. The Enderman is a one-piece inflatable black pixel-patterned suit with purple pixel eyes and includes the fan plus "a detailed instruction sheet for operation and care." The Ender Dragon is "an inflatable black jumpsuit with attached wings" with its own inflating fan. Both require four AA batteries, not included, so add them to your cart or your grocery list. The Spider Jockey follows the same pattern: inflatable jumpsuit, fan, four AAs.

One shipping detail worth knowing before the calendar gets tight: the Enderman page says it "ships separately from other items in your order," cannot ship to a P.O. Box, "may be subject to additional processing days," and is "not eligible for expedited shipping." Order that one early.

Add-ons: Creeper block head and Steve mask

Not every kid needs a full suit. The Creeper Headpiece Block Head ($26.99) ships collapsed and "easily unfolds to become a complete cube that can fit over your head." It is 100% polyester, has "easy eye sockets for good vision," and cleans with a damp cloth. Put it on a green hoodie and you have a Creeper for under thirty dollars. The Adults Minecraft Steve Vacuform Mask ($18.99) is one size fits most, with a foam insert and a mesh eyeplate; the page pitches it for DIY costumes and cosplay, and it is an easy way for an older sibling or a parent to join in.

Build a Minecraft squad

Minecraft is one of the easiest group themes going because the characters do not have to match in style. A typical mix from our shop in Denton: youngest kid in Steve Small, the seven-year-old as the Enderman, the oldest in the Ender Dragon with the wings, and a cousin in a Creeper head over a green sweatshirt. Everyone is recognizably from the same game and nobody is wearing the same thing. If you have a Steve fan and a Creeper fan who refuse to negotiate, good news: in the game those two belong in the same frame anyway.

Comfort tips for trick-or-treating in a box head

• Do a driveway test run. Wire-frame headpieces and inflatable wings change how a kid moves through doorways and past mailboxes. Ten minutes of practice at home saves a lot of frustration on the route.
• Dress for the weather underneath. The pop-outs list a polyester tunic and pants; layer a long-sleeve shirt under them if the night is cool, since you cannot add a coat over a wire frame.
• Batteries in a pocket. For the inflatables, tuck a spare set of four AAs in a parent's pocket. Runtime is not listed on any of our pages, and a sagging Ender Dragon is a sad Ender Dragon.
• Read the care sheet. The Enderman ships with one. The Ender Dragon page spells out the rules: "Do not wash. Do not bleach. Do not tumble dry. Spot clean with a damp cloth then air dry."

Grown-ups joining in

The kids' collection is where the full suits live, but adults are not left out. The Steve vacuform mask above is sized for adults, and a plain blue shirt with jeans finishes the look. Parents who want to go bigger can check the full Minecraft collection for the current line-up; we add pieces as they arrive from the licensee.

Reuse ideas after Halloween

These costumes have a long second life. The Creeper head is built for it; its own page says it is "easy to store for next year." Pop-outs fold down once the wire frame is out of the tunic. Minecraft birthday parties are practically a genre now, and a Steve costume on the birthday kid is a better decoration than any banner. The dress-up bin works too: block heads are exactly the kind of thing that gets pulled out on a rainy Saturday in March. Spot clean, air dry, store loose, and it will be ready.

Are these official Minecraft costumes?

Yes. The product pages carry the Mojang and Microsoft marks, for example "© 2023 Mojang AB. TM Microsoft" on the Steve pop-outs and "TM & © Mojang Synergies AB. TM Microsoft Corp." on the Ender Dragon.

Can my child see out of the Steve head?

The Steve pop-out pages list the headpiece but do not describe the eye openings, so we will not guess. Two related items do: the Creeper Headpiece Block Head has "easy eye sockets for good vision," and the Adults Minecraft Steve Vacuform Mask has a "mesh eyeplate."

What size Minecraft costume fits an 8-year-old?

The Kids Classic Steve Pop-Out in Medium is labeled for ages 7-8, and the Deluxe Inflatable Spider Jockey Medium is also 7-8. The Inflatable Llama Ride-On is one size and "fits up to size 8." If your 8-year-old is tall, look at the Steve Large 10-12.

Is the Enderman inflatable safe for a 6-year-old?

The Enderman page says "one size fits most children" and does not give a minimum age, so we cannot promise a fit for a specific age. It ships with an instruction sheet for the fan and needs four AA batteries. For comparison, our non-Minecraft kids' inflatables are labeled 8 and up, and the Steve Pop-Out Small is made for ages 4-6.
