Halloween Costume Sizing Guide: One-Size-Fits-Most, Kids' Age Ranges, and When to Size Up

Sizing is the question we answer more than any other, and it is the reason most costumes come back to us. A costume is not a T-shirt. The label might say 3T-4T, or Medium 7-8, or "one size fits most adults up to a 47 regular," and each means something specific. This guide walks through how to read them, when to size up, and why getting it right the first time saves real money.

How costume sizing differs from clothing sizing

Three things make costumes different. Most are worn over regular clothes, so they run roomy on purpose. Kids' sizes are usually age ranges rather than the numeric sizes on school clothes. And a lot of adult costumes are one-size, with the real limit tucked into the description. Fabric matters too: a poly-foam tunic has almost no give, while a padded polyester jumpsuit stretches a bit. So the first rule is simple. Ignore the letter on the box and read the range on the product page.

Decoding kids' labels

Here is what the ranges on our kids' costumes, toddler costumes, and baby costumes actually look like, using real items in stock.

  • Baby: 0-6, 6-12, 12-18, 18-24 months. These track the same ages as baby clothes. The Baby Marvel Spider-Man Costume in 12-18 months is a jumper with plastic snaps, booties with non-skid bottoms, and a fabric headpiece, and it "fits most infants 12-18 months." The Baby Christmas Bunny is labeled 18-24 months.
  • Toddler: 3T-4T (sometimes 2T-4T). This is the single most common toddler label in the shop. The Toddler Marvel Spider-Man Costume ($45.99 at time of writing) is a padded jumpsuit with attached boot tops and a full fabric headpiece in 3T-4T.
  • Kids Small: 4-6 or 4-7. Brands split this differently. The Kids Classic Minecraft Steve Pop-Out ($69.99) runs Small 4-6, Medium 7-8, Large 10-12. Star Wars kids' costumes run Small 4-7, Medium 8-10, Large 12-14.
  • Kids Medium: 7-8, 7-10, or 8-10. Food tunics often say "one size fits most kids 7-10." Character jumpsuits usually say 8-10.
  • Kids Large: 10-12 or 12-14. The top of the kids' line. A few items reach 14-16.
  • Teen. Some inflatables give a height instead of an age: the Teen Crewmate inflatable "fits heights from 5 ft. 1 in. to 5 ft. 9 in." Browse teen costumes when a tall twelve-year-old has outgrown the kids' Large.

"One size fits most adults": what the pages actually say

Hundreds of the items in our adult costumes collection are one-size. That phrase hides a limit, and the good product pages tell you what it is:

  • The Adult Christmas Bunny Costume ($78.99) "fits most adults up to a 47 regular," and the page even gives the garment measurement: 64-1/2 inches long by 25 inches wide.
  • The Women's Hipster Ms. Claus romper is "one size fits adults up to size 12."
  • The Adult Taco and Lime couples tunics offer a "comfortable fit for up to a size 46 chest."
  • Sized adult costumes use jacket or dress numbers instead: the Adult Qualux Darth Vader comes in 36-38 and 44-47, and the Adult Ahsoka in Extra Small 0-2, Small 4-6, and Medium 8-10.

So "one size" usually means up to about a men's 46-47 jacket or a women's 12, unless the page says otherwise. Near that line, look for a sized version or a plus size.

When to size up

  • Over-clothes tunics. Foam does not stretch. At the top of a 7-10 range, the next size is the safer buy.
  • Growth spurts. You are ordering in September for late October. Kids at the top of a range on order day are often past it by Halloween.
  • Layering for cold. A long-sleeve shirt and leggings under a jumpsuit take up room. Padded jumpsuits with attached boot tops have the least spare space.
  • Headpieces and masks. Most are one size fits most. Do not size up the whole costume for the sake of the mask.

Plus-size options

We carry plus sizes across adult categories, and the pages state the fit plainly. The Adult Goofball Blue Costume in Plus Size XL "fits size 2X-3X, chest sizes 50-52." The Plus Size Plug and Socket couples set fits "Men XXL and Women 14-20." The Women's Plus Size Sally costume comes in XXL (size 18-20) and XXXL, and the Adult Plus Size Banana is the same pull-over tunic as the standard banana, cut larger. Trust a listed chest measurement over the label.

The return-policy reality

This is why we push measuring. Under our refund policy, return requests must be made within 30 days of receipt, Customer Service must authorize the return in advance, and costumes are returnable only "in their un-opened and un-blemished original packaging" with "original labels affixed." Refunds exclude return shipping, handling, and a 15% restocking fee. After October 5th, returns can take up to 60 days to process once we receive them. Wigs, beards, latex masks, and cosmetics are not returnable at all. None of that is meant to scare you. It is the case for a tape measure and two minutes with the product page before you click.

Still unsure? Ask us

Measure chest, waist, and height, note the range or "up to" limit on the page, and if it is still a coin flip, send us the numbers through our customer service page. We are a family shop in Denton, Texas, and we would much rather help you pick the right size than process a return in the middle of October.

Frequently asked questions

What does "Medium 7-8" mean on a kids' costume?

It is an age range, not a clothing size. A costume labeled Medium 7-8, like the Kids Classic Minecraft Steve Pop-Out in Medium, is cut for a typical 7- to 8-year-old. The same brand's Small is 4-6 and Large is 10-12. Other brands split kids differently (4-7, 8-10, 12-14), so always read the range on the page rather than the letter.

My kid is between sizes. Do I go up or down?

Go up. Costumes are worn over clothes, kids grow between September and October 31, and a slightly long tunic is easier to live with than one that will not go over the head. The exception is a full-body jumpsuit with attached boot tops, where too much extra length becomes a tripping hazard; there, match the range closely.

Can I exchange a costume for a different size?

Our refund policy handles this as a return and a new order. Requests must be made within 30 days of receipt, Customer Service must authorize the return in advance, and costumes are only returnable in unopened, unblemished original packaging with labels attached. Refunds exclude return shipping and a 15% restocking fee, so measuring before you order is the cheaper path.

Do adult costumes come in plus sizes?

Yes, and the pages spell out what that means. The Adult Goofball Blue Costume Plus Size XL lists "fits size 2X-3X, chest sizes 50-52." The Plus Size Plug and Socket couples set fits "Men XXL and Women 14-20." The Women's Plus Size Sally costume in XXL is "size 18-20," and the Adult Plus Size Banana is a pull-over tunic. Search "plus size" in the shop to see everything current.
